Before we tell you what the next latest and greatest DawnTown Competition is going to be, we want you to become aware about another one happening in the area.  It’s called South Florida’s Best Block Contest which is being organized by the Miami Herald and Townhouse Center, a non profit on small scale urbanism by our founder and chairman Andrew Frey.  The contest asks for people to document in photographs or a short video, of what makes for a great urban block here in South Florida.  What makes a good block? Is it the retail? The street furniture? Paseos and alleyways for pedestrian use? The architecture?  The organizers want to know.  Five judges will select the top three video and photo submissions, which will share $3,000 in cash prizes. The judges will also select South Florida’s Best Block, and that overall winner will get a block party. The deadline to enter is Aug. 13, at midnight. Finalists will be announced at noon on Sept. 4.   Just for fun, an online vote will select a people’s choice from the finalists. The judges will announce South Florida’s Best Block on Sept. 9.  For details and to enter the competition, go to miamiherald.com/bestblock.
